The Black Her*Stories Project

deutsch

The Black Her*Stories Project presents the first queer Black feminist film festival in Vienna. The selected films depict stories by and about Black LGBTIQ people (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer), bringing them to the cinema screen and thus creating decolonial and feminist resistance.

The term “Black Her*Story” challenges the word “history” by unveiling and re-arranging the white cis male oriented understanding of the concept of history (“his-story”). The asterisk (*) is used here consciously to stand for the visibility of various gender identities. The Black Her*Stories Project stands for Black feminist resistance and is therefore a political strategy.

The Black Her*Stories Project makes queer realities of life visible and passes on the (his)story(ies) of Black feminists (Black Her*Stories).

For three nights the cinema topkino stands in the light of Black revolutionary resistance. Films by and about Black LGBTIQ people (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer) are the focus of the film festival.

From feature films to documentaries and experimental movie formats, what connects these powerful, artistic and humoristic narratives is their political relevance. Not only do queer Black feminist positions claim space, but social struggles and movements are made visible.

Following the screenings queer Black feminist experts will discuss anti-racist and feminist film critique: How can images in film strengthen Black political consciousness? How can they not only encourage queer Black feminist empowerment but also contribute to decolonial practices?

The Black Her*Stories Project emphazises the long tradition of Black decolonial resistance and its audiovisual repercussions.

Our longer term objective is to create an archive with collaborations and a constant update of queer Black feminist films.
